Before Surgery (Pre-op)


As you prepare for your upcoming joint replacement surgery, we understand this can be a nerve-wracking time. It’s normal to have questions, but rest assured you are in good hands. Our surgical team is dedicated to providing the best care and supporting you throughout the process.

  • Medical aid authorisation will be pre-arranged through the practice.
  • All tests, X-rays and Physician appointments will also be arranged by the practice and confirmed with you (at least 1 – 2 weeks before planned surgery).
  • The Physician will discuss all medications to be discontinued before surgery during the appointment.

  • Smoking should please be discontinued (at least 2 weeks) before surgery.
  • Alcohol intake should also be discontinued (preferably 1 week) before surgery.
  • Do not remove (wax/shave) any hair from the area/limb that will undergo surgery 1 week before the surgery.
  • You are supplied with a bottle of soap (BIOSCRUB) with which the whole body should be washed the night before surgery, as well as the morning of the surgery.

Day of Surgery


We want to reassure you that you’re in excellent hands. Our team is here to guide you through every step of the procedure, and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and well-cared for. We understand that this can feel like a big moment, but know that you’re fully supported as you take this important step toward recovery.

  • Do not eat or drink anything 6 hours before surgery.
  • Report to the hospital at least 4 hours before surgery.
  • Bring your ID, medical aid card as well as authorisation number (received from medical aid) to the hospital.
  • Bring all X-rays/CT/MRI scans, in your possession, to the hospital.
  • Bring all other chronic medications to the hospital in the original packaging.
  • Please only take your medication, as advised by the Physician with a small amount of water the morning of the surgery.
  • A hospital suitcase can be packed for at least 3 days, although you will most likely be discharged the day after the surgery.
  • Ladies can preferably pack night dresses as this will ease the examination after the surgery.

After Surgery(Post-op)


A surgical procedure where the damaged or diseased parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with artificial components made of metal, ceramic, and high-grade plastic.

  • Please remember, the success of the surgery is largely dependent on the rehabilitation.
  • Medications (usually pain, anti-inflammatory and anti-coagulants) will be prescribed.
  • Physiotherapy is done in hospital with guidelines for daily activities. Crutches or a walking ring will also be A follow-up appointment  must please  be made with the physiotherapist 1 week after surgery.

  • Your wound must be left closed, may not get wet and no plasters may be removed. The wound will be handled by us at the next visit.
  • You will most likely be discharged the day after surgery but occasionally you could be required to stay longer.
  • If requested, a medical certificate will be provided.
  • A follow-up appointment is made by practice and settled on the day of discharge: 3 weeks after surgery for wound care, 8 weeks after surgery for a follow-up.
